Reach Out and Read provides young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.

The three-part program begins at the child's 6-month checkup, and continues through age 5, with special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Children are exposed to a literacy-rich waiting room, where books are available to read on their own or with the help of Reach Out and Read volunteers. During well visits, pediatricians, residents and nurse practitioners talk to caregivers about the importance of reading to their children. Each child goes home with one new book after their visit. Families served by the program read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve to their potential. Reach Out and Read is made possible by the support of volunteers and donors who make it possible to put books in the hands of children and their parents. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has given 500,000 books to children since 1996.
