This talk features Syracuse University Humphrey Fellow Mir Taifa Siddika discussing how the power of language created her country of Bangladesh. Language is one of the most crucial parts of any culture and a dominant feature in determining the basis of nationalism or ethnicity. It has immense power, and its impact depends entirely on how it is wielded. Language is intimately related both to ideology and power. It is the key to the complex issues of the distribution of power between the different groups, the socio-economic classes and individuals inhabiting a country. Bangladesh is the only country in the world which was born as a logical consequence of a great Language Movement. This presentation is a curious effort to understand how the power of language became the language of power in determining the creation of a nation, today’s Bangladesh. About the speaker: Mir Taifa Siddika was most recently at the Ministry of Finance in Bangladesh, where she developed and analyzed budget framework and policy papers for the Ministry of Power and the Energy & Mineral Resources. She previously served in various public offices. She earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Social Science in Political Science from the University of Dhaka and a Master’s in Public Policy and Governance from North South University in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
