Known as a social activist and American suffragist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton [1815-1902] was a prominent figure in the early women’s rights effort. Her story, however, is not entirely heroic. Like all leaders, Stanton was a complex figure, whose absolutism about “woman’s rights” contained a racist and elitist stand that continues to shape her legacy.
